How much does custom software cost?

Quick answer

The cost depends on how many kinds of user there are, how many screens and rules the software needs, what it must connect to, and how much design is custom. A quote that prices each part tells you exactly what you are paying for, and lets you remove anything you do not need.

Nobody can give you a fair price for custom software over the phone, and anyone who does is guessing. What we can do is explain what drives the cost, so the quotes you receive make sense and you can shape the project to fit your budget.

What moves the price

  • Kinds of user. An admin, a staff member and a customer each need their own screens and permissions. Every extra role adds work.
  • Screens and rules. A form with three fields is cheap. A form with approval steps, exceptions and notifications is not.
  • Connections. Payments, messaging, accounting software and government portals each need their own integration and testing.
  • Reports. Dashboards and exports are often the most under-estimated part of a project.
  • Custom design. A clean standard layout costs less than a fully branded, animated one.
  • Platforms. A web app is one build. Adding Android and iPhone apps adds more.

Why a lump sum is a warning sign

A single price makes it impossible to see what you are paying for. A quote that lists each part with its own price lets you start with the essentials and add the rest when the software is earning its keep. It also makes later changes predictable, because they join the same list.

The costs after launch

Budget for hosting, any paid services the software uses, and a monthly plan for updates, backups and fixes. These are small next to the build, but they are every month, and they are what keeps the software safe.

How to lower the cost without lowering the quality

Start with a first version that does the one job that matters most. Use standard layouts where nobody will notice. Keep integrations to the tools you actually use. And write the scope down before you ask for a price, so nobody is quoting for guesses.

What we do

After a short call we send a quote that prices each part. You own the full code once the project is paid for. Read about custom software development or ask for a quote.

Questions people ask

Why will nobody give me a price without a call?

Because the price depends on what the software must do, and that takes a conversation to find out. A price given before that is a guess you will pay for later.

Is it cheaper to build in stages?

Usually. A first version that does the main job costs less, goes live sooner, and tells you what the second version should be.

Does the currency matter?

We quote in the currency you ask for. The work is the same wherever you are.
